Institute of Physics is a part of Faculty of Technical Physics, Information Technology and Applied Mathematics of Lodz University of Technology.

Experimental and theoretical investigations in most research areas of modern solid state physics are carried out in the Institute. The investigations are focused on preparation and properties of crystalline, liquid crystalline and amorphous materials. Investigations of interaction of coherent radiation with matter are also carried out, particularly if related to practical applications including medical diagnostics and therapy. The next research areas are numerical simulations of semiconductor optoelectronic devices. Investigations concerning the general theory of relativity and mathematical physics are also performed in the Institute.

In the Institute various scientific devices for other research institutions are constructed.

The institute of Physics was founded in 1970. Since then, the following people were the managers of the institute: Jan Karniewicz (1970-1983), Andrzej Lipiński (1983-1986), Antoni Drobnik (1986-1992), Cecylia Malinowska-Adamska (1992-2001), Włodzimierz Nakwaski (2001-2015). Since 2015 prof. Robert Sarzała is the manager of the Institute.
